Have you ever gotten back from a week's holidays and thought, "that just wasn't long enough."? I know I have.
Even though I'm good at relaxing and letting go of work once I'm on vacation, I do always feel like I am still connected to it in a subtle way. I always have my phone with me. I usually check it twice a day in case there are any emergencies that need to be attended to. I tend to be rushing to get things done before I leave, and then I'm rushing to catch up when I get back.
For better mental health, and at the recommendation of more than one person I see to keep myself healthy and balanced, I needed a longer break from my self-imposed workaholic tendencies. So this upcoming four week holiday has actually been eight months in the making.
I believe the exact words of advice that were given to me were: "If you keep going at this pace you will burn out in two years."
Talk about a reality check.
So here are 5 reasons I am taking an extended vacation and why you should consider it too. You don't have to jump into the deep end like me, but your vacation should be longer than what people expect and longer than what is comfortable for you, in order for it to be effective.
the most uncomfortable - Being away from my office for a month is kinda scary, not just uncomfortable. My mind immediately started to go to the worst-case scenario when it was first suggested to me. Now that I have had 6 months to get used to the idea and plan for my absence it's getting a little less uncomfortable. I keep reminding myself of the quote from Neale Donald Walsch - "Life begins just outside your comfort zone."So you are all officially on notice. I will be beginning my extended vacation on Friday August 4th at 2pm and will be returning to the office on Tuesday September 5th at 9am. Here are some housekeeping tips to keep in mind during my absence:
Now i would love to hear from you! Which of my reasons for taking an extended vacation resonated with you the most? Leave a comment below and I'll be back next week with another edition of Doctor as Teacher Tuesday!

Hi Michelle, what you are doing is so important and I agree 100% with you. Humans are too stressed and we need more than 1 week of vacation to decompress and rejuvenate. It is essential to our health. Here is what resonated with me the most : “I don’t want work to become the most satisfying thing in my life. I need to make space and time for the “fun stuff” or before I know it another year will have gone by.” When I had this epiphany, it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. It is how I live now. Congratulations to you and enjoy your much deserved holiday!
Thanks Lynn!
Good for you, everyone needs to re-charge. Enjoy, I hope your golf goes well!
Enjoy your well-deserved vacation! I just took 2 weeks off, and it took me the first week to stop checking work emails, but by the second week I was enjoying the freedom of being unplugged! I hope you can get to your happy place quickly and just enjoy!
Thanks for your comment Michele! I’m hoping it will only take me a couple days. I’ve tried to set myself up for success by having the whole office shut down for the first week. That way I won’t be tempted to “check in”.
Michelle have a great holiday . I know better than anyone caring is exhausting but we never recognize it . Please have a great vacation and good golf game.! Linda
Thanks Linda!
That’s excellent Michelle! I took 3 weeks off in the Fall and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done. We are all responsible for taking care of ourselves. By taking this time for you, you lead the way for your patients and others to do the same for themselves. Enjoy your time off, you’re worth it 😊.
Thanks Brenda! Your comment is right on – by giving myself permission to take time off I’m hoping others will do the same.
I am a new patient and have not had an appointment with you yet but wanted to say that I think your decision to take an extended vacation for decreasing stress is a great one! It can only be a plus benefit both for your physical and mental health. Will help your patients as well. Congrats on a good decision and am looking forward to meeting you before you go.
