What can I take to support my immune system?

Author: Dr. Michelle Durkin on 5 November 2019

That’s right it’s cold and flu season already. Have you thought about what you should have on hand in the house for your family?

Are you wondering what you should be taking to keep your immune system strong this winter?

In this article I will discuss some of my favourite products.

HMF Fit for School (Genestra) - This immune formula was specifically developed for kids to take during the cold and flu season, but there is no need to limit it to kids because it is a great formula for adults as well. Why do I like this product so much? It contains 12.5 billion CFU of a lactobacillus/bifidobacterium mix, Vitamin C 50mg, and Vitamin D 1000 IU. It comes in an easy to use chewable form and is gluten and dairy-free. If you are looking for a simple, one a day, easy to take immune support formula this winter for yourself and your kids, this one is at the top of my list.

ACES+Zn (CytoMatrix) - This immune formula has all the right ingredients to protect all the mucus membranes in the body. It is also an antioxidant formula and increases activity of your white blood cells. This is the formula I have been taking for the last two years, starting by Thanksgiving and ending after Easter. I used to get sick every holiday and vacation. Not anymore!

Pascoleucyn (Pascoe) - This formula can be used for prevention and for treatment. It is a homeopathic preparation so it is safe to use in combination with any other medications. Most times I will suggest people have this one in their medicine cabinet and start taking as soon as you feel a cold or flu coming on. I love the versatility of this product. It comes in liquid form so is very easy to use in those that can't swallow pills easily. It can be used for all ages. The taste can be a little strong so you may have to mix it with water or a little bit of juice.

Mycoimmune (BioMed) - This is formula I tend to reserve for patient's that have a very weak immune system OR a high level of stress and other formulas don't seem to be strong enough. It can also be used safely with anyone who has cancer, or other immune compromised conditions.

Vitamin D liquid (Metagenics) - Even though this is a product I recommend year round I will still include it on the list. Vitamin D is so important for many reasons in the body and it is top of the list for the immune system. I prefer this product because one drop = 1000IU therefore it is super convenient to take a higher dose without having to take a whole bunch of pills. The best way to determine an appropriate dose is to have your vitamin D level checked in your blood. This will cost approximately $50 as it is not a test that is covered by OHIP regardless if you get a requisition form from your MD or ND.

I swear the reason that Oil of Oregano works for me is that my body steps up my immune system to avoid me taking another dose!

Dr Michelle Durkin ND

I have a love/hate relationship with oil of oregano as well Laura!

I have been using Mucococcinum (once every two weeks) from October through March, plus Vitamin D (one drop daily) and Ester-C (daily). How do you feel about the Mucococcinum? Or would you suggest trying another this year? Thank you so much for your weekly newsletter. Love it!!

Dr Michelle Durkin ND

Hi Patricia,
Glad you enjoy the newsletter!
Yes, you can use Mucococcinum. It is another great remedy for the immune system.
