Why the Provincial Election Matters to Naturopathic Doctors: Part 2

Author: Dr. Quinte Naturopathic Centre on 27 September 2011

If you have not yet been involved in engaging your local candidates in a discussion about the future of naturopathic medicine in our health care system you can read some highlights below. The Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors (OAND) wrote to all four of Ontario’s  political parties to ask them to tell us where they stand on the key issues facing Naturopathic Medicine as part of a sustainable health care system. They heard responses from 3 parties:

  • The Liberal Party has been the party that introduced the Naturopathy Act. They write that they value the strong relationship they have developed with the OAND, and commit to working with us after the election to ensure NDs can work to their full scope of practice.
  • The Ontario NDP supports the recommendations of HPRAC in allowing NDs to be able to access basic primary care drugs. The NDP supports removing barriers to the integration of NDs into primary care models, and the participation of NDs in WSIB and motor vehicle accident claims.
  • The Progressive Conservative Party thanked the OAND for sharing the issues of interest to the profession, and that they look forward to working with us after the election. They did not make commitments on any of the issues raised in the questionnaire.
