New at QNC this Summer 2012: Reflexology

Author: Dr. Quinte Naturopathic Centre on 5 June 2012

I’m delighted to announce that reflexology is now offered at our clinic!  We have a new team member Katherine Conchie (Tuesdays) and myself - Annie House (Thursdays) who are certified reflexologists and members of the RRCO in Canada. We are both committed to offering best practice and gaining further training in the field of reflexology – your feet are in safe hands!

So what is it? And what can it offer you?

Is an ancient art and science of using pressure points in the foot; it was developed by the Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Russians and Egyptians. Today many of the same techniques have been developed into a modern scientific method called reflexology. What joins the ancients with modern practice is the long established principle that there are energy zones that run throughout the body and reflex areas in the feet that correspond to all the major organs, glands and other body parts. Hands can also be used in reflexology.

Main functions

Reduces stress and induces deep relaxation

Reflexology can help by inducing deep tranquil relaxation which allows the body to balance itself and allow healing energy to flow.  Clients are encouraged to ask questions and be proactive in maintaining or regaining their health. Every part of the body is worked upon, sending messages along neural pathways to the brain and spinal cord; they in turn send messages to organs and muscles. Reflexology stimulates over 7,000 nerves when touching the feet, encouraging neural pathways to work more efficiently and allowing the body to work at an optimum level.

Improves circulation in the body

The process of stimulating the whole system by pressure points has benefits of improving circulations throughout the body; this in turn helps the body remove waste products and improves our cardiovascular system.

Cleansing the body

The body cleanses itself by using lymphatic, excretory, and the integumentary system (lymph nodes, the kidneys, and colon and the skin). When these become blocked or functions improperly, toxins and waste matter build up.   Through stimulating the relevant zones, waste can be deposited with greater efficiency.

Balance in the body or homeostasis

Reflexology creates balance allowing the body to run more smoothly , just like having a tune-up for your car. For a body to be healthy all parts should be tuned to improve health.

Revitalizes energy

Energy flows through our bodies it circulates through us on several levels; physically emotionally, and mentally. By relaxing the opening up energy pathways the body revitalises and supplies energy on all levels. This includes mental alertness, or cognitive patterns.

Preventation

Strain on our immune systems comes from many factors. Many of these are stressors that reduce the ability to fight off infection. Regular reflexology is beneficial in improving the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Ailments that may benefit from treatment – the reflexes work best when they are regularly treated (weekly) as the effect is cumulative.
