5 healthy eating tips for busy peeps

Author: Dr. Michelle Durkin on 19 March 2019

Whether you are a mom, a dad, a grandparent, an entrepreneur, a boss, an employee, it doesn't matter...we all have busy lives. And we all struggle with trying to eat healthy when time is of the essence. So here are some tips I follow, that you can start incorporating, to make healthy eating easier in your life:

  • Make your veggies twice the volume (or more) of your protein

Here is a kale/bacon combo in the skillet with onions & garlic. I don't feel guilty eating bacon once in a while because I balance it with lots of veg! Remember this can apply to any animal protein - meat, poultry, fish, seafood, eggs, and wild game.

  • Make one than one recipe with the same key ingredient

I've done this with sweet potatoes from my CSA food box from Fiddlehead Farm. I made Sweet Potatoe Biscuits and a Sweet Potatoe Soufflé. Yum!!!

  • Try looking somewhere different when you've had a busy day at work and want some fast food

I found a frozen cauliflower pizza crust from The Green Root in Rossmore. I added my own spaghetti sauce + a green pepper from my organic food box.

  • Understand that failing to plan is planning to fail

Meal prep is one of the most important habits for long term success with your healthy eating habits. For me I make sure that I always prep a protein for my lunches plus a soup in the winter or a salad in the summer. This week’s meal prep includes Chicken Curry Muffins and Creamy Cauliflower Carrot soup.

  • When making something that is more time consuming, make more than one

I love making spaghetti squash zucchini lasagna, but it is more time consuming. That is why I always make more than one. In fact I made five lasagna's with my mom so we could just put them in the freezer for a quick healthy meal.

Now I would love to hear from you! What is your favourite healthy eating tip? Leave a comment below and I'll be back next week with another edition of Doctor as Teacher Tuesday!
